Gardening Part Two

Hello. This is healthy yellow squash (zucchini) in the foreground, and cucumber in the background, from seeds in week four. Looks like the harvest is going to be good. The watermelon is coming along too. So are the tomatoes and green peppers. (They need a little bit more care.)

Until next time, I’d like to see your garden also.

Shakers, Quakers, EARTHQUAKE !

Hello Family. We're fine, but today we experienced an earthquake. It was centered in Canada, and registered 5.5. Of course it is unusual, especially since we couldn't have it all to ourselves. The quake was felt as far northeast as New York, and farther west as Chicago. Here's what Craines Business news had to report about it.

"Buildings throughout Northeast Ohio swayed for several seconds early this afternoon as an earthquake with origins along the Ontario-Quebec border in Canada sent shock waves through the region.

Initial reports measured the earthquake at 5.5 on the Richter scale.

There were no reports of structural damage to buildings in the region. However, crowds of office workers in downtown Cleveland exited their buildings shortly after 1:30 p.m. when the structures they were occupying began to sway.

Conversation on social media site Twitter indicated most people were excited and amused by the sensation created by the earthquake. Competitions quickly emerged to name songs (such as rock standard “Shake, Rattle and Roll” and Carole King's “I Feel the Earth Move”) that played off the earthquake theme. But perhaps the big winner was D.J. Litten, who tweeted: "USGS now reporting abandoned vuvuzelas found at the epicenter of earthquake." For those not into the World Cup, vuvuzelas are the noisy plastic horns that serve as white noise at the global soccer competition taking place in South Africa."

I was Downtown, but I did not feel the quake, and Lake Erie didn't produce a tsunami. Then, there was a severe weather alert and the sky looked ugly, tornado ugly. All we got was a very light sprinkle, and the sky cleared. Very befuddling indeed. Wew, thank God.

The Green Thumb Works

this week 613

Greetings. Well when I started this garden, I decided to do something a little different. Eh, I hadn’t done it before for this spot. I added two bags of top soil, eighty pounds. Mixed it in well and fertilized. Since it was so hot around May 31st, I decided to plant that very day. This picture was taken two weeks after, and to say the least I was pleased with the results. I planted, cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes, green peppers, and of all things watermelon. (All from seeds) The tomatoes, and the green peppers were started in separate pots. I didn’t have any luck with the green peppers last year because we had a cool summer. They grew but they stalled out and never gave me a harvest. I think I’m getting more control over the green peppers since I have them on the sunny warm porch. The watermelon is another challenge here in Cleveland. I’ve been trying for a couple of years to grow some kind of melon.

d plantsThis is what they looked like after one week. This is supposed to be a heartier type, specific for a short growing season. (They’ll tell you anything to sell watermelon seeds !)IMG00238 This is today. They are healthy but small, for now.

3rd week These are the cucumber, and zucchini today. It’s amazing how large they’ve gotten in just three weeks.

It’s not too late to plant, but if you have just been thinking about it, you better go ahead and get it done. You will be surprised at how relaxing and rewarding it is. Till the soil and replenish the earth. Until next time, grow a garden !

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, BERKLEY

William D. Tyree, III, M. Div., Th.M., D.D., Pastor

June 14, 2010

Dear Family:

Greetings in the matchless name of our Resurrected Lord, Jesus Christ. I am writing to you as a friend and supporter of our ministry at First Baptist Church, Berkley.

We are in the midst of a comprehensive renovation and facility enhancement project. The costs to make our vision a reality total $3.3 million dollars for which we were able to secure a loan of only $2.4 million. This loan was made possible because the men and women of our church gave sacrificial offerings of $300,000 and pledge gifts of $600,000 in a 2 month period. I praise God for touching the hearts of these individuals so that work could begin on our project. (God blessed Shirley and me to be able to sacrifice $80,000 in this venture.)

To fulfill our vision of an elevator addition and the renovation of the second floor of our educational building we need an additional $900,000. I have asked each of our 426 adult members to contribute at least $1000 so that we may approach our lender with leverage to complete the project now. To do this addition in another phase would add $500,000 to the cost.

I am asking you to prayerfully consider supporting us with a $1000 gift. Please make your check payable to First Baptist Church, Berkley and send it to the above address by July 5, 2010. The reason for the short notice is so that we can let the architect and contractor know how to proceed. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly at (757) 418-2948 for further clarification or to have any of your questions answered.

May our God richly bless you for taking the time to read this email and entertaining the idea of supporting us as your friend.

Sincerely,

William D. Tyree, III

P.S. We anticipate worshiping in our newly renovated sanctuary as early as August 15th. The Grand Celebration will be September 5, 2010. More details will follow but please save the date. Lastly, feel free to forward this to any family I may have overlooked.

The Latest Cancer Update

Hello. This is from Cousin Joan

Johns Hopkins Update –FINALLY!

AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY
IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY', BEING THE KEY WORD) TO ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY .

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins :

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer
cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have
multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients
that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after
treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the
cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable
size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a
person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer
cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and
forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic,
but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing
diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day
and by including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing
cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells
in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can
cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7.. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars
and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often
reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of
chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor
destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from
chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either
compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb
to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to
mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy.
Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other
sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer
cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

*CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made
with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute
would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small
amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in
color Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting
off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer
cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based
diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other meat,
like chicken. Meat also contains livestock
antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all
harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole
grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into
an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked
food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live
enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to
cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance
growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building
healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most
vegetables including be an sprouts) and eat some raw
vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)..

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high
caffeine Green tea is a better alternative e and has cancer
fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or
filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap
water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of
digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the
intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic
buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By
refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes
to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the
body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system
(IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals,
EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy
cancer cells.. Other supplements like vitamin E are known
to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's
normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or
unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit.
A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior
be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put
the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to
have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy
life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated
environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to
get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen
therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer
cells.

1. No plastic containers in micro.

2. No water bottles in freezer.

3. No plastic wrap in microwave..

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.
Please share this with your whole email list.........................

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

Sun Safety

Hello. This is something to think about as Summer approaches. There's more to this article at WebMD.com

Sun safety is never out of season. Summer's arrival means it's time for picnics, trips to the pool and beach -- and a spike in sunburns. But winter skiers and fall hikers need to be as wary of the sun's rays as swimmers do. People who work outdoors need to take precautions as well.

The need for sun safety has become clear over the past 30 years, with studies showing that excessive exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer and premature aging of the skin. Harmful rays from the sun -- and from sunlamps and tanning beds -- may also cause eye problems, weaken your immune system, and give you unsightly skin spots and wrinkles, or "leathery" skin.

Sun damage to the body is caused by invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which reaches us as long wavelengths known as UVA and short wavelengths known as UVB. UVB radiation can cause sunburn. But the longer wavelength UVA is dangerous too, as it can penetrate the skin and damage tissue at deeper levels.

Tanning is a sign of the skin reacting to potentially damaging UV radiation by producing additional pigmentation that provides it with some -- but not nearly enough -- protection against sunburn. In fact, tan skin is damaged skin.

No matter what our skin color, we're all potential victims of sunburn and the other detrimental effects of excessive exposure to UV radiation. Although we all need to take precautions to protect our skin, people who need to be especially careful in the sun are those who have:

* pale skin.
* blonde, red, or light brown hair.
* been treated for skin cancer.
* a family member who's had skin cancer.

If you have an illness and take medications, ask your doctor about extra sun care precautions, because some drugs may increase sensitivity to the sun.

Cosmetics that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) also may increase sun sensitivity and susceptibility to sunburn. Look for the FDA's recommended sunburn alert statement on products that contain AHAs.
Reduce Time in the Sun

This is especially recommended from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest. Even on an overcast day, up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can get through the clouds. Stay in the shade as much as possible throughout the day.
Dress With Care

Wear clothes that protect your body. Cover as much of your body as possible if you plan to be outside on a sunny day. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and long pants. Sun-protective clothing is now available in stores. However, the FDA does not regulate such products unless the manufacturer intends to make a medical claim. Consider using an umbrella for shade.

Any one can burn, so be careful in the sun when it's direct.

Examin Your Bank

Hello, greetings. I thought this was an interesting article. Banks are tricky so be careful and watch your hard earned dollar. DON'T MAKE COSTLY MISTAKES !

SmartMoney.com

Consumer banking has grown friendlier over the last few years. Most retail banks have done away with annual fees and account minimums on basic accounts. Some now regularly offer cash incentives and other gifts just for signing up. However, banks have long refused to budge on their ultra-lucrative policies on overdraft fees. Now, that's changing too.

On July 1, new federal rules will require banks to ask customers to opt in for overdraft coverage -- a line of credit that kicks in when account holders make purchases that exceed their available checking and debit account balances. To lure customers to their programs, some banks are trimming their overdraft fees. Currently, such fees average $34 per debit transaction or ATM withdrawal, according to the Center for Responsible Lending.

However, under the new law, if account holders don't opt in, banks won't be able to cover their charges when their account balances fall short. The charge simply will be declined, and the customer won't be charged an overdraft fee.

Still, the banking industry says some demand for the service will persist. "People want their important bills paid," says Nessa Feddis, a vice president and senior federal counsel for the American Bankers Association.

For those who want to retain their overdraft protection, but not the big price tag, here are five tips for cutting your overdraft charges:

Don't Opt In for Overdraft Coverage

More from Yahoo! Finance

Even though some banks recently announced plans to trim their overdraft fees, paying to automatically cover an account overage remains costly. For instance, U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB - News) recently announced that any purchase of $20 or less on an account that's overdrawn will be charged $10 -- down from a fee of $19 to $37.50 per violation -- up to three per day. As long as overages put an account more than $10 overdrawn, cardholders who overdraft three times in one day will still be hit with a $30 fee that could have been avoided.

Some banks even charge a fee each day an account sits in arrears. For instance, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC - News) charges its customers $35 if it determines that an account has been overdrawn for five or more consecutive business days.

"It's the kind of fee that will come back and bite you," says Bill Hardekopf, the chief executive of LowCards.com, a credit-card comparison site.

Carry Backup Cards

Cardholders who don't opt in for overdraft coverage but carry borderline balances still may get turned away at the register. Consumers should keep at least two or three backup cards in their wallet and a little cash just in case, says Odysseas Papadimitriou, the CEO of Evolution Finance, which publishes CardHub.com, a credit card comparison web site. "Keeping an extra one or two credit cards on hand can help prevent running out of payment options if some sort of fraud-related hold strikes your account," he says.

Balance Your Checkbook

To avoid needing a backup, account holders should keep an eye on their account balances, says Papadimitriou. They should check weekly, or even daily if they're operating on the edge, he says. Then, cardholders should be vigilant about withdrawing funds from retail stores that offer cash back on debit-card transactions. Although banks will generally alert customers if they're about to go over their limit at ATMs, in-store debit withdrawals typically won't trigger any overage notification, Papadimitriou says. It's still not clear whether this problem will be fixed when the overdraft coverage opt-in provision takes effect, he says.

Sign Up for Payment Alerts

Cardholders given to procrastination should consider signing up for payment alerts, says Papadimitriou. Most card issuers, including JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM - News), American Express (NYSE: AXP - News) and Bank of America, have long offered to alert their customers when account overages occur or when payment due dates are imminent. "We're trying to help customers to reduce overdraft fees," says a BofA spokesman. "We don't want them to buy a $40 cup of coffee."

Consider Certain Overdraft Protection Options

Consumers might also consider linking their checking account to either a savings account or a credit card, suggests Hardekopf. There is usually a $5 to $10 fee for dipping into another account. Plus, linked accounts with credit cards carry the potential for getting hit with interest charges. However, for customers who pay off their balance each month, this can a good option, he says. If not, those fees, which get rolled into customers' balances, could come back to haunt them, he says.

Some banks tack on interest charges right away. For instance, U.S. Bank offers to link customers' checking accounts to a reserve line of credit, which charges a "slightly higher" interest rate on overages at the time of the advance, says Kent Stone, an executive vice president for consumer banking at U.S. Bank.
